Does anyone know anything about St Vincent's Guest House on Magazine Street? It used to be an orphanage, named St Vincent's Infant Asylum. I'm curious about what it is like now, though. Is it a nice place to stay?

If you're not expecting anything fancy, it will be fine. The way they make it look from the outside, and the way i've seen brochures of it look, it looks really nice- but that isn't the case inside. If you're unconcerned about decor, comfy beds, and things that most hotels provide, and you just want a place to crash after mardi gras....it would be great for that. if you complain about any lack of anything there, they make sure they remind you that they are a "GUest house" and NOT a motel. hehe

I remember staying there once and not even being able to get the key in my room door to work. The desk clerk had left for the night and a random guest had to help me get in. It's just really outdated and "old" inside...and not in a GOOD vintage or "historical" way. More like in a shabby way.

the nice part that i liked is that you could sit outside on the balconies all night and there were a lot of nice and interesting guests to hang out with- as it seems to attract less families and couples and more foreign backpacker types....there was always someone unique to talk to.

as for an inexpensive place to crash, i'd say go for it.

If it is where the St. Vincent de Paul store used to be, on the corner of Magazine and Robert, it's no longer a hostel. The facade of the building has been redone, and it is now a vitamin shop and a restaurant permit has been granted for the other side of the building. I could be thinking about the wrong building, but I know that one used to be called St. VIncents.

Nice if you are expecting it to be like a hostle, nothing like a motel... no tv, no phones in rooms, elevators are slow and scary (when they are working). It is basically just a no frills place to spend the night.

Part of the movie "Candyman" were filmed there. Some people also say that it is haunted.

The exterior of the complex is much nicer than the interior.
