Maybe they are having second thoughts about their belief. They want to prove to themselves that they have made the right decision.

So, if people went around the world calling your religion or social group "criminals" and attempted to enact laws that would take away your rights, you wouldn't make any attempt to defend yourself and to educate the hateful on the facts?
No? You wouldn't? Then why be a hypochristian and expect atheists not to do the same?
Ours is not an anti-religious position, but a factual one. Atheists seen not to ban religion but to protect ourselves from it. If you consider that not to be a valid reason, then you had best not complain when the same happens to you.
Besides that, you have the right to state your mumbo jumbo, and atheists have a right to poke holes in your hot air balloon. If you "argument" for "god" is so strong, it will withstand any and all questions from atheists. If your argument would NOT withstand our questions, or you are _afraid_ that your argument would wilt under examination, then your filth - oops, faith - isn't worth believing in.

as an athiest, i enjoy finding out why people fell the need to believe in a "higher power". i wholeheartedly support religion, as i feel many people need it to continue their daily lives, making them feel better about life, and their afterlife-thus making my life easier. i often ask about religion amongst friends because i wonder why people believe that theirs is the true faith, and why dead religions, such as the ancient egyptians pagan worship focused mainly on the sun god(which one would think, biblically, that the older people had a metaphysical connection with a "higher power" yet refused to believe in the same "higher power"), are considered wrong. or even why lutherans and catholics fight over true christianity. my interest in religion stems from the fact that i believe that man created the idea of god and then perverted it to the point that man began to hate man.
the reason we question so much? think of it this way- you are in a christian in a plane crash on a remote island where the natives (who have never met outsiders) believe that a god kills anyone who goes near the mountain. a doctor in the plane crash with you notices that the mountain is a breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry malaria. what do you do? mock their faith? attempt to convert? or allow them to belive in a higher power? the attempt to cure them is not an option
an athiest has these 3 options, just like a christian plane crash victim has.
if you crashed you would want to know why they believed it was god, spirit, etc.
just wondering, since you asked this question, what would you do?

There isn't an I don't believe in god section. If there were, the section would be flooded by christians witnessing their god beliefs.

I think its Jesus getting under their skin to make them curious. They come off hateful and defensive, but I think their little voice is saying...." well....what if they are right....look how many follow it ".
Otherwise they wouldn't even be here. As this can be proven by simple means. I do not like Chinese food....guess where you never find me, in a Chinese restaurant. Case closed.
