I don't think anyone really knows. I love to drink but I can go weeks without a drink and don't see any pink elephants. I think its more a mental addiction more hna a physical addiction.

If it's a disease, then it's one that still can be prevented. I believe some people are more prone to it than others, and that THAT can be inherited.
But it seems to be, like any other addiction, a mind/personality thing. If you are negative or depressed, alcoholism is a great escape, for anybody, no matter what their genes...

viewing alcoholism as a disease depends upon which model you are following. if you are following the "disease model" of addiction (like AA or NA) then yes, alcholism is a disease and you can only recover by abstinence. personally I believe in the diathesis-stress model of addiction...basically you are born with certain traits passed down from your parents. depending upon stimuli in the environment (in this case people drinking excessively) you may or may not have a greater likelihood of expressing the particular trait. The nih website samhsa.gov have lots of info on the topic.

Yes, alcholism is a disease and I feel that it is inherited. But in the same aspect I feel everyone has a choice of yes or no. The decision is yours to make. Just know if your parents were drinkers how it affected you and now don't let it affect the rest of your life.

Yes, it is in your genes. I do not need fundamental and sources because alcoholism ran in my family, my ex-husband's family. All you have to do is look around and you will know the truth. My children were warned from the time they were three not to drink. Their father did attempt to get them drunk on the couple of visitations that he had with them. My children went through the drinking phase but knew to be careful enough to know when to quit drinking. My son learned when he put his car around a telephone pole and broke the windshield with his head.

according to some books that i have read, alcoholism is a disease cause it has physical and psychological effects on the body and mind.
and i have heard that it is inherited. but not likely about alcohol, its just that they are easily 'addicted' to something...thats whats passed down.. you can change it..

everyone in AA meetings will tell you yes that it is. I myself have a long history of both men and women in my family being drunks. I choose not to drink. I don't try it because i know that I can easily fall down that path. so it might be a disease that's preventable.
