Yes, soul retrieval is something done by shamans. It is done after severe trauma that causes withdrawal. People who are in a state of disassociation from reality, or who are catatonic, can sometimes benefit from this technique. There is argument over whether it is literal or psychological, but I find such arguments to be irrelevant.
