Yes, they can, but it takes a lot of work and total commitment.
Here are suggestions:
If you met online, you really need to meet in person and spend a week or more together, preferably within 6-12 months of starting the online relationship. While you really get to know people online, and on the phone, you can't know how you interact together and how compatible you are until you have face to face contact.
Have daily contact if possible, including webcam, where you can interact while seeing each others facial and body language and feel more together.
Write the occasional snail mail letter! It adds another dynamic to the relationship. Also, exchange small gifts, even if it's just a hand drawn picture or something, from time to time.
Quickly work to resolve differences, and don't let them fester.
Visit as often as possible.

Well I was dating someone for two years before he got a job offer in China. We BOTh agreed that this was something that he needed to take. After five months, I was getting worried. At six months I went to see him for two months and then broke up when I came home. I believe that we could have still been dating but we changed into different people with different proiorities. We're both still young and have a lot we want to do before we get married. Here's the kicker. We still after a year talk about getting back together when he get's home and we still love each other.
So yes, I think that a long distance relationship can work if both the parties involved know where they are in life and can still love each other while being apart and still be who they are comfortably.

I have to tell you that if will work but there is a higher risk of it not working I mean the most average time for a long distace realation to work is for about 3 weeks to the max. But some times it goes to a year or maybe lasts forever but you have a much more chance of not working things out. The man wants the girl to hug and the girl needs a guy to comfort her and talk to her hold her and tell her that he is there. while he is there but in long distace it is extrimly hard.

i'm in a protracted distant relationship now. We communicate familiar. yet to be easy, i'm moving nearer to my Love next month. i do no longer understand how long shall we've made it long distance. this is truly complicated. I advise which you communicate with your better half approximately getting collectively interior the destiny. You relationship would proceed to exist it understanding which you would be collectively interior the long-term.

It can work if both people are committed to making it work. When you can't be together communication is imperative. Maybe drop a card in the mail every month or whenever to say ... simply ... whatever is on your heart. Send flowers, not a dozen roses - but just a simple rose. Good luck

I, myself was in a long distance relationship with my boyfriend that I have now. We started dating in January of 2006 and I was living about 3 hours away from him. You just have to call eachother, email, and visit eachother. As long as you both care about eachother and want it too work out. It will! Believe me, because me and my boyfriend are still together and now living together! Just put trust in them and have them do the same and it will work.

I agree I think it is to hard to keep a relationship if you dont see each other. Talking on the phone isnt enough.
