Can someone explain to me the mystic way which has five steps?

more specifically what is the awakening and how does it relate at all to pain and beauty? Religionwise, it makes a person more religious and that person finds god.

the awakening
self-knowledge/purgation
surrender, or the dark night of the soul
ecstacy/union with god
