I am afraid the previous poster might be slightly mistaken with his reply to your answer.
Patong is the busiest Phuket beach resort area because of the high concentration of Phuket nightlife venues (beer bars, discos etc) that are present in Patong beach.
The actual beach at Patong is by far not the nicest beach on Phuket. The water is somewhat dirty due to pollution (sewage problems have been written about in the local English speaking newspaper, the Phuket gazette) and especially during the high season the beach is completely stuffed with people. Beach vendors keep harrasing the tourists on the beach and the sun beds are lined up right next to each other so little privacy is available.
If you would like a clean beach with clean Andaman sea water but still want to be near all the action of Patong then I suggest for you to look into staying at nearby Kamala beach or Kata / Karon beach which are only a short drive away. You can take a taxi or tuk tuk (or drive yourself) to Patong when ever you feel like it and enjoy the rest of the time cleaner and nicer beaches as well as cheaper prices at hotels and restaurants.

I will go along with George. Patong is over-rated just because it has the most people, but the better beaches are a short distance away. Even better will be some of the islands nearby. Have a check at the pier for a trip to see these islands.
As for hotel, check the rates. Sometimes, the online rate may not be lower than if you called to make reservation. Plus, you may have to pay first if you make an online booking.
Enjoy your stay.

Patong is definitely the best beach in Phuket. It is crowded though, and thats because this beach is way better than other beaches around. So i suggest you dont think much and make your way to Patong. After reaching Phuket airport, take a cab to Patong...it will cost you 550 baht. But ofcoz, book a hotel early thru internet. If you are looking for good hotel, go for Seaview hotel. There are many good hotels there u can choose from, but early booking is always recommended.

The best place to stay is a bit subjective and part of the consideration of price and value.
For luxury the 5 star Baan Yin Dee Boutique is the best and is located close to the beach on a hillside with stunning views over Patong Bay. I think prices start from around $130 approx.
For value there are endless alternatives with free inclusions, but Phuket is so cheap these days price probably is the least of your considerations. Try this site to check out both last minute and general discount bookings with descriptions and images.
Definitely book online .... and do it with a reputable web site. Here's some:

the best beaches in phuket are either karon or kata..patong is highly overated.it certainly has the nightlife, also the yahoos ,patong beach is usually very crowded and the water is very cloudy.to book hotel go to late stays phuket, but it has to be done 1 or 2 days before you arrive, you can usually get accomadation at half the normal price or certainly much cheaper than normal, otherwise book on line.which you can do a few weeks before arrival.both karon and kata are 10-15 minutes from patong.grab a tuk-tuk or taxi to get there.there are some great hotel in both karon and kata, hope this helps
