Four Legs of Dharma:
MERCY
CHARITY
EDUCATION
SELF-CONTROL
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
MERCY: This extends not just to the less fortunate, but also to all creatures anywhere. So this is also another environmental perspective. To hurt the environment creates harm to all creatures of the earth as well as other humans. Mercy is similar to kindness or compassion. Mercy also could mean caring and concern for others.
CHARITY: One famous American said to give according to your purse. In other words, we need to be wise about giving. It may not be appropriate to give so much we neglect certain concerns for ourselves or those who might depend on us for support. It also helps to give in such a way that the most good is done.

EDUCATION: Education relates to truth. There is material education and there is spiritual education. Both can be good, but spiritual education should come first. We need to consider the most basic material education before we get into other things. Basic education might be how to cook, prepare and store our own food. Basic education might mean basic literacy.
SELF-CONTROL: This relates to austerity "tapasya", penance, and sacrifice "yajna". We also sometimes see a relationship with terms such as celibacy.

"In the age of Satya [truthfulness] your four legs were established by the four principles of austerity, cleanliness, mercy and truthfulness. But it appears that three of your legs are broken due to rampant irreligion in the form of pride, lust for women, and intoxication."

"Education, charity, penance and truth are said to be the four legs of religion, and to learn this there are four orders of life with different classifications of castes according to vocation. Brahmä created all these in systematic order."
SB 3.12.41
"Sukadeva Gosvami said: My dear King, in the beginning, during Satya-yuga, the age of truth, religion is present with all four of its legs intact and is carefully maintained by the people of that age. These four legs of powerful religion are truthfulness, mercy, austerity and charity."
