Do not get any working dogs like German Shepherds, or any dog that was bred to do an actual job, like herding, pointing, hunting. Terriers are usually too energetic. Some of the other answers here are bad suggestions!
Try a Greyhound, they make excellent apartment dogs, they are calm and sweet, and they are big, you can find a Greyhound rescue, and you will get a purebred dog for a low price and save it.
Other than Greyhounds, try mastiff, bulldog, hounds, any dog that is not too energetic or driven. Go to a shelter or pound and find a calm dog, even an older dog!

I have a Chow Chow crossed with a German Shepherd she weights about 55lbs and she has always lived in the house and our house isn't that big as long as she get several walks a day she is very happy and healthy. She is also a very good watch dog and very protective without being aggressive when I walk her late at night she keeps an eye on me and if she senses something she doesn't like about someone coming to near us she doesn't hesitate to get between me and that person and give them a growl to let them know they should back off but she's never bitten anyone and loves kids and elderly people.

I've always lived in Big City apartments with dogs. Or maybe I should say I have always live in my dog's apartment. My recommendation for a great dog is a chow Shepard mix. Female of course. They are VERY smart, protective, and very loyal with a terriffic bark. Get a dark colored one because people are more frightened of dark dogs. And they usually end up being the size of the chow. Get one at the dog pound. Smartest dog I've ever had and others with this mix also agree.

I have known many different large dog breeds to live in apartments in the city. The key thing is exercise. So, if you're unable to provide him/her with at least 3 walks a day you should consider an alarm system.
Now, for the breeds: German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Greyhounds, Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, Great Danes, Standard Poodle (believe it or not). All of those I have seen living quietly in an apartment, but I've also seen them running around at the local dog park where they got to go every day.
Perhaps something you should looks at more is the price of veterinary care (Great Danes are prone to genetic diseases, but Greyhounds virtually never get sick) and grooming needs (German Shepherds shed a LOT, but Poodles literally don't shed). A dog breed guide or selector should help you with that sort of stuff.
Good luck with your choice!

I would go to the pound and adopt one so you can see it full grown and look at the energy level. A bit more laid back of a dog will work better in an apartment than a very energetic dog. Many people in my building have labs and retrievers and would swear by them

I have a Pomeranian and her bark terrifies everyone. She is, however, a very gentle dog that loves people. I live in a 110 apartment complex and everyone knows and loves to pet her. She's a favorite in the building. I had a wonderful Cocker Spaniel who couldn't have been better. He died at 17 and people here still talk about Okie.

Everyone has some good points. However, I do want to caution you. Please don't get a puppy if you can't spend more time with it. Puppies shouldn't be alone all day. Get a trained adult. Also, a dog with a hearty bark can also cause problems with your neighbors. I myself have a Chihuahua. He is perfect for me and a small apartment.

ya.. you will discover it at toys r us canines are actually not "lazy".. all of them want interplay, play time, education, etc all canines shed to three degree all canines want walks on a daily basis.. expecially once you're in an apartment. they could desire to PEE, and want an outlet for their potential. Why do you even want a canines? needless to say you like something you are able to work together with while its convienient for you.. or you seem to anticipate it to purely lay on the settee and not inconvienience you in any way different smart. keep on with crammed animals, forget approximately a actual canines.
