The three general orders aren't just guidelines, but literal word of law, aren't they? Could a soldier get presecuted criminally for violating one of the three general orders?

The Army has 3 general orders and the Marines have 11. The General Orders are in fact orders. If you disobey a general order you are disobeying an actual order. These General Orders are what every soldier/marine must follow on top of orders given to them by the sergeant of the guard, or anybody else in their line of duty, (Corporal of the Guard, Sergeant of the Guard, Officer of the Day, Officer of the guard...)

The three general orders refer to guard duty and yes if you violate one you can be court marshaled

No. But you could get an article 13 ;)

To clarify, technically you could be prosecuted, but what you would be prosecuted for is "disobeying orders."
