I really admire chow chows. They seem very cat like and I want to get one maybe in a couple years.

Chows ONLY make good pets if you get them as puppies and socialize them very well with other dogs and people. As soon as they have had all of their "puppy" vaccines (the whole series), get them out in public. Take them to the groomer after they have had their rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age. They are not cat like, they are dogs. Do your breed research so you KNOW what you are getting. They require a lot of maintenance. The brushing of hair never stops! Please, please, please, do your breed research and find a good reputable breeder and not one who is in it for the money. A good breeder always wants to better the breed, not just make money. If you are thinking of other breeds, check out the book "Paws to Consider" by Brian Kilcommons. It gives the good, the bad and the ugly on most breeds.

I have a Chow Chow & German Shepherd cross and she is the first dog that I have ever owned, puppy training was difficult but we got through it and she is now ten years old and never messes in the house unless it is an absoulute emergency IE: nobody home and had really bad diarreah and that only has happened twice. She listens well gets along with our three cats they even rub up against her and lick her ears, gets along well with other dogs, loves kids and elderly people and is an all-around great pet and I wouldn't trade her for anything.
P.S. I've heard more horror stories about Rotties, Pits and Doberman's than I have ever heard about Chow's and as for them being a one person pet that is somewhat true in the way that she is most loyal to me but also loves my boyfriend, my mom and father-in-law.

Chow Chows are amazing dogs, but if you are an inexperienced dog owner try a chow shepard mix. The greatest mix I've ever owned. Plus they can end up looking very Chow like.Good Luck.

My sister had a Chow Chow for 13 years, her name was Ginger and she was the sweetest thing. I have two of her "kids" , Chow mixes , and they as well are very loving. It just depends on how you raise him/her :) Give the dog a good loving home with lots of love and treats and attention and you will have a great dog.

My aunt has a chow and they love her to death. The dog is great with my aunt and her kids, however she is not very friendly with people who are not in her (the dog's) immediate family. If I were you, I would do a lot of research on the breed and talk to some breeders before you get one. A good breeder will be happy to give you the pros and cons of a breed and they will also tell you if they think you would do better with a different breed.

Chows are amazing pets if properly socialized. They can be tempermental, but don't let that turn you off to them. I incourage you to research them and maybe spend time with a few before you take the leap into getting one. They aren't for everyone. I had a couple of them growing up, and they were very loyal and had good guard dog tendencies. Great pets in my opinion, but not always kid friendly.

Any dog can make a good pet. It all depends on how they are raised. Just remember that with just about ANY dog it will be like a perpetual 3 year old in the house. LOL

we had one years ago, he was great with older kids (like around age 10 ) but anyone younger than no, but our chow was very well mannered, but the owner gets to decide how their dog will be raised, try to get them around young, middle aged, and older people, try to socialize them...if u dont, u might run into trouble

I have never liked chows since a stray one got into a herd of goats and killed many of them. We finally were able to get close enough to kill him. I don't advocate killing dogs, but this dog killed many of our farm animals and would not have stopped if we hadn't stopped him. What if he had turned that killing over to a child.
