Honesty is a start, and don't be a hippocrite. Don't be the parent who goes on and on about not smoking, for example, when you have a ciggy dangling out of your mouth. If your kids ask you about sex or drugs, just give them plain honest answers, including whether or not you've smoked pot. If you are having trouble with an answer, try saying something like "You know what, that's a good question...." and try googling some answers together. Never ever turn them away when they actually come to you and want to talk, or they won't come to you again. I find being honest, and even candid, works (my stepsister comes to me and not my mother because all my mother says is don't do it! whenever she has a question.) Example: marijuana. I told my sister I tried it, and that it's natural to experiment, but a) it's a retarded waste of money, and b) I just decided it wasn't something I'm into. In the end, they are going to make up their own minds regardless of what you have to say.

One more thing, always be supportive! They might become a bass player instead of the doctor you wanted them to be, but if they are happy doing it, support them! Pushing them to do something they don't want, will only end up pushing them away, and I personally would like to die not having my children harbour any resentment towards me!

Just make sure they know that whatever the problem that you are there for them, they can come to you with anything and you will listen..and do your best to not get angry or judge...I think that's the main problem with young kids they don't know they can go to their parents to talk about whatever so they turn to other things to fill the void the parents being there for them would fill.

Try Parenting with Love & Logic.

This is an awesome method of dealing with teens. I have been to several seminars where they talked about this method.
You learn alot about what kind of parent you are and you learn positive ways to deal with teenagers.
