As my birthday inches closer, I have realized that I'm stuck in a rut when it comes to the bar. I order from a select list of drinks. If I get beer, it's either Guinness or a good wheat beer. If I want some liquor I get Captain and Coke, a Whisky Sour, or a Jack and Coke. I'm looking for a few recommendations for a new drink to get when I go out. Something easy that most bars (especially the sketchy ones I thrive on) would have the ingredients for. And please, nothing too sweet or girly. I can't stand those drinks. I like to taste my alcohol.

One of my favorites has always been a kamakazi on the rocks. Vodka, triple-sec, and lime juice, over ice. No fancy colors or other stuff, but not too stiff like a straight shot. Gets the job done at a reasonable price.

For a break now and then, I like Crown Royal with diet coke. Sounds funny, but really a nice break from the rum and coke thing.

PS. Stay away from the Jager Meister. It tastes like a mix between Vicks Formula 44 and castor oil. And the worst part is, the more you drink, the worst they taste!!!! yuck!!!

But don't hang up on all of the "sweet or girly" drinks. One of my all time favorites is a "Russian Qualude". Equal half-shots of vodka, Kalua, Bailey's and Frangelico. Tastes like chocolate milk, but sneaks up on ya!

Depends on how bold you are. There is a great drink called the Jersey Highway/Turnpike. Go to your favorite watering hole with a friend. Get the bartender to pore about 8 different shots you might like mixed together on the bar. Have them wipe the mess up with a clean bar rag and then wring them into shot glasses for both of you. Enjoy!!!

You might try the drink "Screaming Organism". It's not a bad drink and great fun to order aloud at a bar.

Gin and tonics are an old standy-by of mine. Usually get it with Tanqueray.

Otherwise I go for a Cape Codder (aka a Cape Coddah, I'm from Boston). It's just vodka, cran juice and lime.

Southern Comfort n' Lime. It's pretty good with Coke and a lime too, but I like it better with the club soda and lime juice.
