Translations????????

Question

Ok so...i need some clearing up here.
For the longest time 666 was the number of evilness. Right? Ok, now i'm hearing that they (don't know who THEY are) read the translation or whatever wrong, and the evil number is really 616.
One...is that true?
and
Two...is there anything else they got wrong?

just curious.

Yes, in older translations of the bible the number WAS 616.See, both the Greeks and the Hebrews' letters double as numbers, but their alphabets are a little bit different, so in one version it was 616, in another, 666.

Rev. 13:16 And it puts under compulsion all persons, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, that they should give these a mark in their right hand or upon their forehead, 17 and that nobody might be able to buy or sell except a person having the mark, the name of the wild beast or the number of its name. 18 Here is where wisdom comes in: Let the one that has intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man’s number; and its number is six hundred and sixty-six.

In the eighties, when I was about 17, some friends and I pondered over this. We thought maybe it was the number of letters in the president's name: Ronald (6 letters) Wilson (6 letters) Reagan (6 letters).
Or also maybe the UPC code, of which the first band is a 6, the middle band is a 6, and the last band is a 6.

Much later, we read a book by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, called Revelation-It's grand climax. This book seems to be the most reasonable explanation of the 666 question.
It also does a consistent job of explaining the rest of Revelation.

666 has as far as I can tell never been the number of evil, as it clearly says that the number has to do with man.
That is why we were looking to a human relationship for this number.

I suggest that the next time the JW's come to your door you ask them for a free copy of this book (I think you can make a donation if you want) and read it.

Second question: I don't know what else these commentators are teaching, but after a mistake like 616 I don't need to hear any more.
