To get the best sounds, beats, etc in electronic music, have PCs caught up with specialized synth and drum modules. Certainly pc-based sequencers have. I'm looking to get (back) into music and wonder if I need a bunch of keyboards and modules still or can I go totally computer-based...

To compose music, you should be able to work with the PC. Obviously, to play music the keyboards are best.

you still require synth module - that piece that creates the actual sound - there is a basic one in every computer.
To play mutliple sounds you need multiple synths
so best to use the computer as a way of store song info and sending to synth modules (external) via midi or USB.

The computer then can easily keep up with the speed of sending out midi info to the external devices and not be slowed down trying to create sounds.

although you can do what you say there is a point where the computer cannot keep up to the amount of info required to generate multiple sounds - either PC or Apple will have this issue.
