I am an atheist but I've no problem with people believing in god. If it makes them more moral then I'm all for it.

But since most atheists (and I've made it a point to meet many in the last few years) are not just a-theist but ANTI-theist I no longer tell folks I'm am atheist.

So what should I tell folks I am so they give me the benefit of the doubt and allow me the freedom to demonstrate I have the same moral values as they do.

Why do you have tell them anything? I mean, really, it's nobody's business, and there's just certain things that don't need to be the topic of discussion.

You sound like you're open minded. You may not believe, but if God parked his chariot on your front lawn, you would give him a fair listening too, right?

I think if you are willing to consider that God might exist, then you should probably call youself an agnostic. I see your point. Atheists have started sounding more and more like Atheist-Fundamentalists! Douglass Adams, who I highly respect, referred to himself as an Atheist-Evangelical. That denotes the concept that not only do I not believe in a god, but I'm unwilling to hang around with you if you do.

I think if you're open minded, you probably don't want to call yourself atheist.

be who you are and quit being afraid of what everyone thinks. i had the same problem with telling people i'm bisexual. they make ALL KINDS of ridiculous assumptions that have nothing to do with me or who i am. you just gotta tell them otherwise and if they insist on being jerks, let them. you let them make you embarrassed about who you are just because of the lies they believe. educate.

i label myself an agnostic atheist. it says you don't believe there is a god, but you acknowledge that there is the possibility that you are wrong.

Here's how it works: There will always be people whos opinions differ from yours. More often then not, they will be the usual scum inherent in society. If your beliefs are not congruent to theirs, they will insult/indimidate you. So it's impossible to satisfy all their demands and go without being ridiculed by at least somebody.

Instead of saying you are this label or that label, just say "I haven't seen anything that has convinced me there's a God". They can't blame you for that. Just be sure you have all the facts:

Tell them to believe what ever they want to believe, but always stay open to the possibility that our belief's may not be true.

You're going to be ostracized by SOMEBODY, no matter what you do. I say f*ck 'em, be yourself, and don't worry about anyone else's opinion.

Tell them that you choose to not answer. You are comfortable with your spirtuality and choose not to label yourself.
