John Wayne was greatly influenced by his long standing working and personal relationship with legendary director (and Catholic) John Ford, and by his 2nd wife, who was also Catholic.

He spent most of his life as a Presbyterian, but converted to Catholicism shortly before he died.

Wayne's surviving relatives, many of whom are also Catholic, can confirm this.

Wayne was a smart guy. He knew a good deal when he saw one, and since he was already a baptized Christian, he had nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

Catholics are privileged to enjoy an extraordinary (supernatural) number and type of end of life benefits, that properly administered, may result in a soul's immediate admittance to heaven, often escorted there personally, by Jesus himself.

Can't beat that!

Actually, he didn't "convert" to Catholicism as he was brought up Catholic but had stopped attending church. Shortly before he died he figured he better cover all his bases and called a priest to bring him back to the fold.
