Maybe you stopped them from doing what they want/like or used to do. Maybe not enough freedom....

Most likely meant that they felt held back by you for some reason. It could mean that you were standing in between them and their social life, or them and their career. Something that they want out of life but can't picture accomplishing with you there.
Maybe you disapproved of something they did, were strict with them, or just weren't at the same point in your life as them.
Don't take it personally, life happens, people change, and most of the time we have no idea what we really want. Don't blame yourself, s/he could have easily just said something like that during a breakup, people say a lot of stupid things that don't make sense during that dramatic time. For that reason, try not to overanalyze every statement said.

Maybe they meant standing in the way of a job, or a dream like finishing college or moving to Europe.

I take it to mean that you're standing in the way of what they want from their lives and what goals they are trying to reach.
