First, shop around. Your initial portfolio is going to cost, and it's a good idea to find someone who will take the images and then NOT copyright them if you can. (I, personally, take digital images, burn them to disk and allow my clients to print them as much as they want. The processing and developing is the big expense of photography.) Word of mouth is a very good way to find photographers. Find someone who is really good with grads, who is really ingenuitive. And make sure that you look at their portfolio, ask questions as to how many models they have shot. Also ask them about their preferences. You know what style of photography you need, so make sure that you ask them what they do, what they like. Find out how long they have been in the business. Consider this an audition. Good luck!

What you are doing now is good.
I work in Nevada and have a nice portfolio. I use a 4x5" and RZ67 Pro II for imaging.
Make sure you find someone who is capable and respectful. There are a million photographers out there. Indeed, in the digital age, there are billions of people putting "photographer" on their shingle.
Take your time and choose wisely.

you might want to consider joining deviantART and other communities... benefits:
may find a capable photographer in ur area is willing to shoot u for free are very little...
meet new like minded people
will have a free gallery and soon a portfolio gallery for your best works to display to other photographers
I've only recently started to get interested in photography so i don't know any popular sites specifically for it... other options could be placing an ad... if u are a student u could put one up on a notice board (and only meet in a safe open place if u don't know them before hand)
there really is many ways to find someone... good luck

http://www.onemodelplace.com it's free to set up a model's portfolio and you might even find some photographers willing to do everything free if you allow them to put the photos in there own portfolio.

If you are signed with a professional modeling agency, they should send you to the photographer they use - at no cost to you.
