Well, first off i am 16 bout to be 17. Living in washington all my life, my dad, as early as i can remember has been a NASCAR fan. As so, has raised me to be one too.
So for me its mostly become tradition to enjoy nascar. I love the sport for its enthusiasm, and they are the gladiators of modern day. They risk there necks going 170+ mph to get payed, give the audience a good show, and to have fun. There are many other reasons, but those are some of the main ones.
Although many people "dis" on NASCAR because they "punch the gas" and "go left", i find it enjoyable and exciting to see them race each other into the corners. I mean whats so exciting about a bunch of guys play with balls. No matter what sport it is, you can make it sound boring.
So that leads me to the next point, IRL is kool because they go 200+ on average. But, they suck mainly because of the decision to split it between KART and IRL. They made the fields significantly smaller, 20 or so drivers. Also, they are too weak to bump and rub, so its a lot less eventful than NASCAR. So in short, open wheel racing is less eventful and smaller field size.
Dirt racing is ok, but is....not very exciting to me. I dont know much about it, but it would seem to be slower, and less endurance.
I used to like NASCAR a lot more before NEXTEL took it over. They are a poor owner of NASCAR. IMO they ruined NASCAR. With that stupid rules change, they ruined the game franchise. Also, although stated by drivers they retired because of there age, it has been said that they were asked to retire by NEXTEL, for room for the "Young guns". So loss of respect there. And NEXTEL Cup? that sounds like a pansy sport, Winston Cup, that to me sounds more manly, and kool.
But bottom line is, NASCAR is somewhat dissapointing due to the new ownership. But is overall still better than most motorsports and for the matter sports i see on TV. But lucky for me....the Daytona 500 is on my B-Day!!! And was when i was born. So Im having a Daytona 500 Birthday party, gonna watch in on the New Plasma screen with some friends. Im looking forward to this one!

I was only 9 years old at the time when I got hooked onto NASCAR. It was the summer of '95 and being a kid from the south I thought loud fast cars were the coolest things going, so when I stumbled across the bright, flashy looking stock cars racing at 190 mph on the TV, I thought it and the drivers were the coolest things since sliced bread, and I still think so today. My first race I attended was the '96 Brickyard 400 at INDY, and I have been to many other Cup races since that day.
I just have grown to understand every little thing that each team is trying to accomplish on each given race weekend. I think thats the key. Once you start watching after a few seasons you understand the talent drivers have and what tracks they and their teams shine at.
Some people it might take going to your first race to discover your love for NASCAR racing. Go to a NASCAR Nextel Cup race, if that doesn't do anything to get your attention, then nothing probably will.

I watch NASCAR becuase the NFL season is over... Having the Super Bowl and the Daytona 500 in the same month is GREAT!!!
However, I tend to lose interest when the NFL season starts back up... so, I'm not really a die-hard fan.
I live in Texas, 'bout 30 minutes away from TMS. I've been to the April race each of the last two years (this being the third). I have to say... it was hard for me to initially watch it on TV (and get into it). But, as soon as I went to the track and FELT the POWER of those cars... man, that was all I needed.
Basically, I'm a NASCAR fan from Daytona to Daytona (from the 500 to the July race under the lights).

I actually started out watching Formula One racing, and moved on to NASCAR a couple of years ago. I watch because I enjoy the commentary, I like the look of the cars (as opposed to sprint cars, which kind of make me wrinkle my nose. Hey, I'm a chick! That kind of thing matters.), and I enjoy the suspense and the high speeds. I also find the personalities (drivers and otherwise!) to be a lot of fun, and very colourful.
My husband and I had our first "date" at the local track, and what attracted me to the sport LIVE was watching the wrecks and the bumping and spinning. NASCAR is famous (infamous?) for that kind of thing, and I'm not ashamed to say that I enjoy a good tussle on the track (provided no one gets hurt, of course).
There's faster, slicker, and more manufactured motor sports out there, but NASCAR will always be my favourite.

Because I can't get to every track for every race. If I could I may never watch TV again.
Ok I would keep the TV to watch F1.
Oh, I am sorry; you meant why NASCAR and not the other types of racing. Hey, racing is racing. NASCAR is the premier series in the US right now and that is what is on.
I watch all kinds of racing and love all kinds of racing as do most NASCAR Fans. Lately you have to watch the other formats of racing to see where the next Star will come from.
In the old days NASCAR drivers came up through the normal rank and file of the NASCAR system. Today they are coming from everywhere and anywhere.
Jeff Gordon came out of the USAC series (which is why some Fans keep saying he didn't earn his place in NASCAR; Four Championship...end of discussion). Tony Stewart came out of IRL.
NASCAR is the series all the big names are landing at now. It's ruffling some feathers of the old school Fans having so many "Yankees" around, but hey...times change and NASCAR has learned that and adopted to the changes to rise above all other forms of racing.

I have followed NASCAR since 1960.I've been to races in Alabama,Georgia,Florida,North Carolina.I watched my first race at a 1/4 mile track and the latest at the 2.66 mile Talladega speedway.
this is a form of recreation,we are watching the best 43 drivers for that weekend. We get a chance to see a car that is in name simular to what we drive. We use this as a way to meet with some people we only see at races.
I watch some NHRA,and open wheel.I even look for dirt races(the true breeding ground of racing).
So when I sit down to watch a race I am dropping reality for a little while.

Nascar racing for me is more exciting than other racing events like Formula I for example. The amount of car 43, the crash (could sound creepy but is fun) and the different race track that makes it more interesting. I love nascar and I watch it almost every sunday.

Basically its a family tradition. I was a couple weeks old when my parents took me to my first NASCAR race in 1972.
We have always gone to watch dirt track racing through out Ohio and Indiana. So we have seen alot of the past and current drivers before they were big names.
As an adult I go to IRL races also.

For alot of reasons....#1 Jr.....,The Competition, Speed, Atmosphere, Crashes, Excitement,
Have you even stood beside the track when the sound of thunder passes by you....there is no RUSH like it...
Even better...take a Petty driving experience and drive behind the wheel with an average of 132 mph...on the high banks of TMS.....and just imagine what it would be like to have 3 or 4 wide.....
Just got back from Daytona.....What a thrill standing in turn three....

Because Football season is over. Nascar has driven me away as a fan because of the inconsistantsy from year to year over the rules. They need to make them and stick to them. First they changed the points, again, then they went from 10 to 12 drivers in the chase. Not to mention that they have just about taken it out of the SOUTH were it belongs ! But, it is good for a Sunday nap anyway.
