There have been like 5 jobs between my husband and me and we moved across country. My husband briefly worked as an independent contracter as well. I think we should have our taxes done by professionals; He wants to do them online. I am afraid we're going to mess up on something, and it is my LAST want to be on the crap list with the IRS. What would you do? I'm assuming our tax return is going to be pretty complicated. It's just the two of us, no kids, no house, and we file married filing jointly, but with all the jobs and the moving expenses (inclusive of a storage unit) I can't help thinking we really should let our taxes be done by someone who really knows what they are doing.

In the grand scheme of things your return isn't terribly complicated, but unless you've run across these types of items before, could be a little tricky.

If your income is under around $40,000 a year, look for a VITA or TCE site near you - they'll prepare your taxes at no charge. See irs.gov for more information on these programs.

My wife is an independent contractor. We pay to have our taxes done every year. It's a bit spendy--$300 or $400 to have the two different states and the federal and the schedule C and all that. But our CPA always finds different things that I would never have thought to deduct that it pays for itself.

And the peace of mind that you have some belief that you have done things correctly is well worth it.

TurboTax is great if you want to do them yourself. They have a built in checker and auditor so you don't make mistakes. They'll also give you suggestions as to things you can deduct (like the property taxes you pay for your car to the DMV).
