my mother brought me to a deaf mass (the priest would talk and sign) and the priest said a story about how god asked the jews a question. i dont remember it word for word but heres my best. the question was something like, "and where will you go now? will you go down the river and worship the gods of (named a civilization), to (some other civilization) and worship their gods, or will you worship me, your lord and savior? maybe i forgot a part of it but this seems to me that god never said there is only him. and the first of the ten commandments says "thou shalt not worship anyother god but me" doesnt this leave a bit of room for other gods as well or is it up for interpretation? and if there are no other dieties then why is god also called a jealous god? what would he have to be jealous about if there were no other gods? please correct me if im wrong but i dont think it ever says anything about there being only one god in existance in the bible at all.

The Bible starts the explanation of this in Genesis and ends in Revelations.

You are making the same mistake so many people make. Do you expect to hear one passage, a few verses, from the Bible and that will explain all of your questions about God? The priest chose that passage for some reason, but there are many places in the Bible where it talks about God being the one true God. Many of these verses have been share with you here. Do not overlook this truth! (Except for Dr. Delight. His answer is another lie straight from Satan. The "us" is referring to the triune nature of God-The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. God never calls Himself one of many gods.)

Genesis 1:1 says, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth..." It did not say "A God" or "one of the gods" or "someone's god." It says, "God."

THERE IS ONE GOD. You have been given a lot of verses to read that will prove that to you. You need to get into the Word and read them for yourself. Ask the Lord for wisdom to understand His Word. Do not EVER believe what a priest or a preacher or anyone says-write down the reference and look it up for yourself. If they do not give the references, then they are not doing a good job. When you study the Bible and it becomes part of you, then you will always know a lie when you hear it because you will know that you have read the truth in the Bible.

THE ONLY OTHER GOD THERE IS is Satan-or so he would have you believe. He is really ONLY a fallen angel. "In whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." (2 Corinthians 4:4)

Satan is called the Father of Lies (John 8:44), The Prince of the Power of the Air (Ephesians 2:2), the God of this World (2 Corinthians 4:4). He is such a good liar, that because he could not be a god in his own right (because there is only ONE God and he was not Him), he found a way to make people think that he WAS a god. No one would worship Satan if they knew who or what he was, because he's vile and crafty and perverse. So he disguised himself as an ANGEL OF LIGHT (2 Corinthians 11:14). That is another name that the Bible calls him. He has propagated all of the lies that cause one person to have a vision and start a different religion. He has spoken lies to people telling them to create dieties because they don't like the teachings of Jesus or the personality of God.

He is the one who speaks into your heart and mind that God really isn't the ONLY God and that you can worship others. This is Satan.

The only enemy that God had in the Bible was Satan. Satan propagated his lies so far and wide that every society had hundreds of gods- the sun was a god, the trees, the moon, the cattle, the birds.......All Satan cared about was that if people were worshipping the Sun, they were not worshipping God. If they were worshipping the earth, they were not worshipping God. Satan doesn't care what you do as long as you do not love and worship God. Pretty crafty, huh? So God lumped them all together because He knew that Satan was behind it all.

It doesn't matter what "other" god you worship. If you are not worshipping the One True and Living God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, then you are worshipping Satan by default. You may not think you are actively "worshipping" him, but the way you are living your life is pleasing Satan and not God.

God has a right to be jealous because He created us to have fellowship with him. And then we turned our backs on Him to follow a lie?

YOU SAID, "please correct me if im wrong but i dont think it ever says anything about there being only one god in existance in the bible at all" If you have ever read the Bible at all, you would not be able to deny that there is a thread woven throughout its entirety that speaks to God's sovereignty. This correction is given out of love. I can not allow the Word of God to be mishandled. The truth must be shared.

You surely can not say now that the Bible does not say what you asked about. You can say that you DO NOT BELIEVE it. But you can not say the Bible does not say it. You have been given the references and by turning away from this truth, you are sealing your own fate.

I am speaking to you as if you were not a Believer, because you can not be a Believer in the Christian faith unless you accept the One True God and His Son. You really need to seek to know more about Jesus. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." If you want to reach God, the only way is through faith in Christ. Being a good person will not do it. Sacrifice will not do it. Pennance and "Hail Marys" will not do it.

I have seen your other questions and answers. I know about your doubt and unbelief. I am glad that you are asking questions, even if some are intended as insults. You will find the answers that you seek.

Once you become a believer, you need to make reading the Bible a priority in your life. There are many flaming arrows (lies)being thrown by the "evil one." DO NOT let them come from your bow.

When the Bible says to not worship any other gods, it is not acknowledging that they exist. Specifically for the Israelites coming out of Egypt, they had been around idol worship for generations and God was reminding them not to worship what others call gods.

Passages that tell us there is only one God:
- Dt 4:35 - ... besides him there is no other
- Isaiah 44:6 - ...I am the first and the last; apart from me there is no God.
- John 5:44 - ...yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
- Romans 8:4 - 6 - ...an idol has no real existence...although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth - as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords" - yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist...." The quotes around "gods" and "lords" are in the original to designate they are "so-called gods/lords".

God is called a jealous God because He doesn't like it when His children give their worship and praise to a god that does not exist. This can be compared to a man whose wife flirts with or gives her affection to another man. Even though the god is not real, the person worshiping this god has given over his/her heart to it and abandoned the One and True God.

The idea of there being only one God is somewhere in the OT. It is the part that says something like: "Hear O, Israel, know that your God is one God." It is called the Shema.

Just because people worship other gods, doesn't mean that that 'god' exist. Your car can be a god, but does that make it a *real* god? No.

Are you sure you read the Bible? Him being jealous is the word we use today. It perfectly describes His expectation of our affections. No Other God. Men worship other gods because we are all created by Him and all desire to worship something, anything, even if it's ourselves. It's a need built into our being. This is abundantly clear through the scriptures.

JEREMIAH 32:26 At that the word of Jehovah occurred to Jeremiah, saying: 27 “Here I am, Jehovah, the God of all flesh. For me is there any matter at all too wonderful? 28 Therefore this is what Jehovah has said, ‘Here I am giving this city into the hand of the Chal·de′ans and into the hand of Neb·u·chad·rez′zar the king of Babylon, and he must capture it. 29 And the Chal·de′ans who are fighting against this city must come in and set this city aflame with fire and must burn it down and the houses upon the roofs of which they have made sacrificial smoke to Ba′al and have poured out drink offerings to other gods for the purpose of offending me.’
NOT THE EXACT SCRIPTURE BUT CLOSE

From what the apostle Paul says, it seems evident that pagan priests partook of sacrificial animals. So did the individuals presenting these sacrifices to false gods. But the apostle warned fellow believers: “The things which the nations sacrifice they sacrifice to demons, and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers with the demons. You cannot be drinking the cup of Jehovah and the cup of demons; you cannot be partaking of ‘the table of Jehovah’ [this act signifying peace with God as partakers of the Lord’s Evening Meal] and the table of demons. Or ‘are we inciting Jehovah to jealousy’? We are not stronger than he is, are we?”—1 Cor. 10:18-22.

You might be thinking about Joshua 24:14, 15.
Before their leader, Joshua died, he said to the Israelites:
"Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."

Joshua said this because the people of Israel had just come from Egypt, out of slavery to live in their "promised land" (where Israel is now). But the people in Egypt and the people in their new home all had their own "gods", (sun gods, grain gods, fertility gods, etc.) These were false gods that they had made up.

There's a really cool story in the Bible about a show down between God and one of these gods (Baal). It's in 1 Kings 18:16-45.)

Exodus 20: 3 says "you shall have no other gods before me". He isnt jealous because there ARE other gods, He is jealous because we are putting others before Him. We should only worship God, because He is the only one who can even give us hope. Like Buddhists, their "god" is DEAD!!!! Jesus is alive and coming back!! There is also another verse that says "In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. So it shows that there was only one God in the beginning and that is our wonderful Savior. And He is the only God, all the rest are idols.....

Humans will make gods out of trees, animals, carven images, or a piece of paper if you give them time. The fact that one worships something they consider "a" god, does not mean it is the True God...Creator of all.

1 Chronicles 16:26 For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.

Jeremiah 16:20 Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods?

To answer the second part of your question: Jealousy when referring to the Lord...is not similar to the human sin of jealousy. When humans become jealous, it's because they want someone or something that belongs to another. The foundation of their jealousy is rooted in selfishness and greed.

Also, it's important to emphasize, that when scriptures are translated, the meaning is sometimes lost if one is not familiar with Greek, Hebrew, Latin, etc.

Jealousy in the Bible when referring to God...is taken from the Hebrew word Qanna(and a few others) which refer to the zeal and passion God has about something which belongs to Him.

Exodus 20:4-5 says, "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God"

God created humans...His children...to praise, worship, love, and glorify Him, and so that He could love them. Thus, when humans build objects or worship things not of God, He is rightfully jealous, because He is alone is worthy of the above. The Lord is also passionate when we choose to worship other gods, because He knows that it will eventually bring us harm and ultimately death. He is concerned for us.

Here is an example. Let's say you gave birth to a son. You raised that child, provided for all his needs, protected him, and loved him unconditionally. Eventually a new neighbor moves next door. You know this neighbor is a liar, thief, and abuser of children.

Your son meets this neighbor, and is deceived into disowning you as a parent, and gives all his love, respect, and honor to this neighbor. How long would it take for your passion to ignite???

How would you feel? Would you not have the right to be passionate about this betrayal? Wouldn't you zealously inform your child that this person is dangerous, and urge him to remember that no one will love him the way you do? Wouldn't there be an urgency to do whatever it took to help your child see the error of his ways?

If you answered yes to any of the above, your jealousy would not be sinful in the sense that you want something which does not belong to you. That is your child, and your reaction is out of love, concern, and strong passion at watching your son treat a stranger the way he should be treating you. Even worse, you would be beyond passion knowing this person would eventually harm your son?

Now...imagine how God must feel when he looks at all he has created for our pleasure: galaxies, nature, animals, wild life, human senses to bring us joy, etc, and still humans deny His authority and choose to worship things which do not come close to his power and magnificence.

The Lord must truly have amazing patience, to look upon His children who worship nature, when He gave us nature as GIFTS of beauty. That's like someone giving you a picture frame as a present, and you bow before the frame everyday thanking it for coming into your life. God is truly, truly, forgiving. Miji
