As a person who has both a shamrock tattoo and a tribal tattoo, I think the Shamrock would be awesome but I wouldn't combine the shamrock with celtic knots in it with a tribal design. The Shamrock will be busy enough and I think a tribal background would just detract from the uniqueness of the Shamrock's design. I also think that the location you want to put it is just fine, I have a Native American medicine shield on my left bicep, I'm damn proud of it and I love the fact that it shows most of the time.

Go for the shield. In my opinion, it would also look better in black ink, and possibly on your upper back. Have you ever considered getting a word or phrase in Irish opposed to the celtic designs? A friend of mine was planning on getting a design, but decided that they were so common, so did a phrase instead on his forearm, and it looks amazing.

If you have to come to Yahoo answers to decide on which tattoo to get, then you should hold off on the decision to get a tatoo in the first place. It's going to be on your body your whole life, and nothing anyone says here or anywhere else should register a blip on your radar. It's a purely personal decision that only YOU can make. We're totally annonymous strangers who will never see you or your tattoo, so don't trust us to make the choice. Think about what YOU want to see on your own body the rest of your life.
And if you're really gung-ho about tattoos and really really love both designs, get them both done - One on the left, and one on the right. Or you could end up looking at them and deciding you don't want either and hold off til you find the right one.
Either way - Your choice.

I like both ideas, why not get both one on the arm and one on the leg or a different part of the body. I have a few that are similar, although I have about 25 to 30 of them and have about 20 more drawn up to get. Its a personal expression of yourself and it will definitely be with you forever.

Get a shamrock, as long as you don't mean 4 leaf clover. I am also Irish, and hate it when people get one and call it the other. Yes, there is a difference.

I'm hoping you are Irish otherwise neither. But I would go for the Celtic Knot shield.

I personally like the Celtic knot shield idea...its unique and I think the shamrock idea is kinda overdone. You just see too many people with shamrocks so it's better to be bold and do something new...But thats just my opinion...good luck with your decision!

I'm not generally a fan of tribal tattoos (just personal preference), so my vote goes for the second one.

tattoos stay longer with you than lovers i think you should do something that shouts YOU! Something u can relates on, your origins, your name in other language, your personalities etc. Never decide anything in hassle or else you ends up regreting it. Like myself i have been looking for a perfect tattoo like forever, but i found one which combines of my name and my zodiac. Love it!
