The American bulldogs tend to be an aggressive breed of dog, but can be trained properly. Just be sure to try and keep him out of situations that he becomes aggressive. If he's food protective try to keep feeding him when he's alone. Typically, the dog won't hurt anyone, unless like i said the wrong situation comes about, or the dog is poorly or badly socialized.

I have two, and from a serious breeder. They are classically known as "Guardian Angles" is what I was told 6 months after I was attacked by my puppy, of course, it didn't recognize me, I was wearing cover-up, hat, goggles and the wind at the dogs back, and when I went for the back door it got me. while only 43 lbs then, it was dangerous. I never wanted a mean dog, my daughter chose it when she was early 4yr's now 9, they have an incredible bond. So, I called the breeder and they simply repeated what they had told me, they intently protect your property and most of all the children, the reason for the name, Guardian Angles, they love kids and protect them to a fault and will not injure them in any way. So, the only thing is, they can easily be trained to accept certain people and some not. Some they are good with, but if they haven't seen them in your house they won't let them in.
What an American bull dog is, first loveable and family oriented, BUT, they were originally bread to be on Live stock farms they can subdue a hog or a cow on their own, hold them from running off. It's their sheer power that seems to scare people, but I know of none that has attacked anyone off property just from roaming, which they won't normally do, they protect the home so they won't stray far. But since they have bit pressure 1 and 1/2 (one and a half times of a pit bull, which have none of the same blood line as each other) almost equal to a Rottweiler. It's the perfect dog, but as now days, they have to live around imperfect people. If you're not direct with them, you'll have to repeat your commands, so being stern (like most all above says) will make for a great relationship. But don't send a stranger into your house to get something, unless the dog is trained away from it's instincts, because they will not let them in and if they insist it will be ugly, mindful they are 1 1/2 and powerful as a pit bull, but evenly tempered.
This behavior I described is predictable. when I want someone to be accepted I walk the dog up to the person and pat that person on the shoulder or the chest and say good person and that's it, done. We have alligators, she's killed 3 and a number of Armadillos, opossums, inhingas (cormorants) can't catch the deer, but they try and one squirrel, plus all the stuff I hear but can't see in the dark. They are beautiful animals, the female is now missing teeth from the confrontations with gators and I keep her from the waters edge because a gator is likely to prevail in the water, my daughter would be devastated.

Please dont get a dog if you have no idea about them... American Bulldogs are very large, powerful and often strong willed dogs that require an experienced handler who knows exactly what a dominance hierarchy is. All the training in the world can be erased by mismanagement, on the part of an inexperienced caretaker. \

ANY kind of LARGE dog is potentially dangerous in the wrong hands even of people who mean well but have no clue.. I have lived with an American Bulldog and they are intelligent, affectionate, highly trainable and good natured dogs... however they can also be stubborn, dominant, aggressive, willful and incredibly strong... They are not a dog for the weak of will... and they are certainly NOT for people who have even a smidgeon of fear.. because they will feel your fear and use it to their advantage to bully you.

American bulldogs are not any more dangerous than any other breed of dog. I agree 100% with some of the other comments. If you are afraid of the dog, do not get it! Bulldogs are stubborn as a breed and American bulldogs are the largest of the bully family. They are not a dog for the first time dog owner and not a dog that should be handled by someone who is less than confident of their handling skills.

What do you mean by trained?? Obedience? Puppy classes? Housebroken? Your question was kind of vague. I would also be curious as to why someone is rehoming a 1 year old "trained" dog. It would make me wonder initiallly

Dogs are conditionally responsive creatures
if handled and cared for responsibly they are very easy to get along with and receiptive to almost any circumstance.....
If not, any dog can show aggression and unbalanced behavior !!

Bulldogs can be somewhat moody--but it is not a major problem unless the owner is not equipted to deal with it properly-- you just need to have a steady and firm hand and let them know that their behavior is unacceptable and if you are in a proper "Alpha" role with the animal--- their behavior will modify accordingly !!!

Yes, they are explosive and filled with shrapnel and will blow up if you drop one. But seriously now...They are not rare. What is your experience with dogs? They are a powerful breed and unless you know what you are getting into, they can be overwhelming and will be running the house if you don't know how to control it properly. If you really love dogs, then go to your local shelter, find a friendly dog and save it's life. It feels better in the long run. Ask anyone who has rescued a dog.

Look, any dog can be dangerous with the wrong person handling them. some more so than others. But, then again I've known plenty of sweet pitbulls and rotties. It's the handler (usually) not the dog who makes them dangerous.

if you are afraid of any breed, its best you stay away from it, all large bulldog breeds need an experienced handler to thrive,

they are not bad, but like any 100lb animal they can be dangerous
