I bet you Christians are going to say crap like, love, compassion and happiness….how can a child feel anything remotely like these emotions when they are mentally picturing an image of a kind gentle man being whipped, beaten, flayed, nailed to a cross and then a spear being shoved into his side and then being told that this man suffered this for you?

my 5 year old daughter came home from sunday school crying and terrified because she saw a picture of a man nailed to a cross with blood all over. that poor little girl never went back there. something like that on tv would be rated R abd if they are going to teach it, they need to do it much more clearly! (this happened before i became athiest)

Sunday Schools stress the Christmas story much more than the passion of Christ, but even though I'm a Christian, the two emotions I felt most often as a child were boredom and fear of being called on in Sunday School. As soon as I was allowed to quit going, I did.

They don't teach little bitty kids the graphic atrocities that happened to Jesus. They tactfully and gracefully touch on that, and then elaborate when the child is older. No parent would want to expose their children to such scary and horrible things. So they learn the teachings of Jesus and His Father and the classic Bible stories when they are very small, and as they get older, these stories are taught on a more in-depth level. The funny thing is, adults still study the exact same stories and teachings as children, but we break each passage down to really understand it better.
To answer your question, the emotions felt by small children when at church are happiness and caring. You correctly predicted that. :o)

No

They usually get taught simple Bible stories. Like David and Goliath. Like the Natvity, the Three Wise Men the star in the sky.

According to my 11 year old standing next to me ....

That they would be scared of the picturing. So the solution would be watching and understanding the Passion of the Christ and learning about the sacrifice and why Jesus gave himself up for us.

This ..... from the mouth of my 11 year old who stood here, read the question, and told me what to write.

Martyrs are the true gods of most religions. They energize and focus the masses on one deified image. They make it easy to vilify those that, justifiably or not, opposed the martyr. You have seen it throughout human history, you see it today. Only extremist Christians see a difference between their religious extremism and that of non-Christians.

In my case, skepticism. I had done enough science by the time I encountered the biblical tales to take them with several grains of salt.

I just wanted to know why everybody said that the big 't' at the front of the church stands for "Jesus". Silly adults, there's no T in Jesus!
