Eating two apples a day could prevent the formation of gastric ulcers, according to Italian research. Researchers found that apple polyphenol extracts reduced the amount of injury sustained by human gastric epithelial cells exposed to indometacin in vitro by 50 per cent. Until recently, medical professional thought stomach ulcers were caused by any number of things including stress. Not true! SAtomach ulcers are caused by bacteria called Helicobacter which are found in the stomachs animals. The species of Helicobacter found in the human stomach, H. pylori, is extremely common. In the United States and similarly developed countries, its prevalence increases at about 1% per year of age so that the majority of adults above age 50 are infected. In less developed countries, infection rates are dramatically higher, with up to 80% of children infected.
