I do, and I reject all of that fiction.

I was born, baptised, raised (Church every Sunday, CCD every Saturday) and confirmed Catholic, I understand the Gospel, I had shoved down my throat for 25 years. I don't agree with or believe it, so I converted to Buddhism, never regretted it. But I think if people want to be Christian, that is okay with me.
EDIT: LEXIE, what makes anyone an "authority" on the Gospel?, Being a believer? No. It is a very simple concept, you can understand something and still disagree with it.

The Bible is a book of truth expressed in metaphors and parables most of the time.Unfortunately most believers cling to the face or literal meanings that serve their immagination and opinions. People naturally tend to follow the easy path. People generally do not meditate to uncover the spiritual meanings of the allegorical stories in the bible. People spend time digging depths of the meaning of the works of great thinkers like shakespear. The word of God as revealed warrant more time to search for the hidden meanings buried in the words. Unfortunately the divines and ecclasiatics as us seat on our brains and summit to faith so that they can remain incharge. Those that reject the christain faith have not been told the truth in the Gospel. Instead of rationally explainning the meanings of the sayings of Christ, people are asked to believe irrationally. The words of Christ have a creative power that can easily be demonstrated.

From my own experience I rejected the gospel until it was finally presented in a way that made sense to the way I think. I suddenly understood, and felt foolish for not having understood the simplicity of it sooner. But yes, I agree that it's basically rejected because it is not understood.

People that have never read the bible are most likely to reject it as it is too easy to attack the authenticity and actuality of the message. When you really think about it, it would be ignorant to accept anything without asking the big questions, ie it would be ignorant to accept the bible without reading it, and there are many questions about God and the existence of mankind, further complicated by the nature of truth which is hidden by deception. For truth to exist there must be deception. The mysteriousness of existence is intended and challenging. It is quite ironic that one of the main messages of the bible is faith and then another main message is to spread the word of God (via the bible). This tells us that it is by reading the bible we gain faith. Consider the word a source of truth and we are not likely to find the truth by not reading it.
For people who do read the bible or have limited or insightful knowledge of the word, many still do reject the gospel based on their unwillingness to apply this truth in the modern world or surrender their will. They do not reject it for the sake of finding fault. It is a huge courageous step to surrender one's will and I personally believe that our lives are a personal journey of experiences that teach us meaning and direct us to the internal conflict of surrending our will if we seek truth by reading the word and look to fulfill our yearning. One who takes this path will feel this. The point of difference is between knowing this and really feeling this. This is what are lives are, experiences to learn and feel this inherent wisdom, not to apply a halfhearted formulae in this chaotic, complex world. We will not be strong enough. This is the ultimate test.
John 7:17 " If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own".

Thats a great Q. Back when i was an athiest I was aware of the word "Gospel" but I didnt know what it was. I suppose if I would have had it explained to me I wouldve understood the main idea but not understood what would drive anybody to believe it. To answer your Q, I believe they reject it on whatever limited understanding they have of it.

I understand it as what it really represents, a book written by humans at a time when the knowledge of the world was limited. So humans invented a god to fill in the gaps. But when science comes in and proves something else, religion slowly gets smaller and smaller and the bible more and more like a regular book.

No. They have at best a superficial understanding of just the basics. What's interesting is that people with even this small amount of knowledge prefer to the darkness rather than coming to the light. After all, what could anyone have against truth; justice; caring for your fellow man, and wanting to do good ??? They prefer the darkness, some are ignorant enough to think its cool.

I think the only people who do understand it, reject it.
I for one spent my childhood studying that one book in three languages. I've read it in English, Spanish and Latin, several times. Is that true of you too?

Apparently not. Just because many of them say they have read the Bible certainly doesn't make them an authority on the subject, and in fact, some of their questions and answers clearly show just how ignorant they are.

Yes, I think that most that reject it really do not understand it. They think they do, but they don't. There mind is already closed to it and they will not open their eyes to see. Also, the key to deeper understanding scripture is through the Holy Spirit, which is acquired through accepting Jesus as Savior. Those that really want to read and truly want to learn and have not yet accepted Jesus can get sight from it as well, as long as they listen with their hearts.
