Rum is the distilled mast of sugar syrup.
First, sugar cane is pressed, and this produces a clear sweet liquid. Then, depending on the type of rum, this liquid is allowed to ferment by adding water and yeast. the yeast eat the sugars in this liquid. As they go about thier business eating and dividing, they burn calories, just like you and I do when we exercise. When we burn calories, we make sweat, and other stuff best left in the bathroom. When yeast burn calories, they make CO2 and alcohol.
When the yeast has eaten all of the sugar they can hold, this bubbly stuff, or 'mast' is put into a cooker. This cooker heats the mast up to the boiling point of alcohol, which is 160 degrees. Since this is less than the boiling point of water, the steam that comes out is nearly pure alcohol.
This is rum.
No, it is not like ice tea. There is no sugar left. The making of alcohol is an interesting subject, one that you will probably enjoy in your future chemistry classes.
I am not prepared to discuss drinking alcoholic beverages with you. This is a matter best left for a trusted adult; but let me assure you that you will NOT like the taste of rum. It is NOT like iced tea.

Anything with sugar (fruits) or carbohydrates (potatoes) can be fermented to make alcohol. I think Rum is made from sugar cane and is a strong spirit (30-40%?).
It was given to sailors as a daily ration by the British Navy and others in the colonial age.
Note that in those days putting alcohol in your water was not a bad way of sterilizing it.

Rum is hard liquor made from by-products of cane sugar
It's fermented and the alcohol content is high to very high - the darker the rum, the higher the alcohol content. Most rums range in alcohol content of anywhere from 20% to 80% (also called 80 proof) - very potent stuff.

Rum is a drink....think vodka not coke. It's made from distilled sugarcane. And the pirates drink it because in the caribbean they used to farm alot of sugarcane so it was available. If it was pirates of the siberian they would have been drinking vodka!
