Actually it's not the same. Just a little history, most people don't know that TIP is an acronym that stands for:
To Insure Promptness, so with that being said,although most people don't do this, a TIP is to be given before you order/be seated this will guarantee great service,which getting a great table is a part of....

Yes its a bribe - OFFCOURSE it is ! Americans don't seem to know any better. I feel sick to my stomach and cheated by dining out in the States, making reservations, tipping say 10 % even though I don't beleive in it ! Than some thief expects to be paid out of your wallet - this is the service Industry so serve already ! At home we request a table of our choice when making the reservation ! (no thiefs or bribes appreciated !)
