the answer to your question lies in Rev. 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and FOR THY PLEASURE THEY ARE AND WERE CREATED.
We were created to be a pleasure to God, and we can fulfill this by our obediance to the word of God.
If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11I HAVE TOLD YOU THIS SO THAT MY JOY MAY BE IN YOU AND THAT YOUR JOY MAY BE COMPLETE. John 15:10-11
Did you catch that, if we obey his comands his joy will be in us, (we fullfill rev 4:11) and the result is our COMPLETE joy!!
there ya have it.

"For example a great artist will by the necessity of his need for self-expression become a great artist" Isn't asking questions also an expression of a need for a great asker? I'm not suggesting that some people don't ask questions for the wrong reasons, and therefore come up with the wrong answers. But I think it must also be true that some are asking for the right reasons. Those being that it's all they can imagine themselves doing and that it 'feels' instinctively right. So I don't think it's a good idea for everyone to ignore the idea of an after life(which seems to be what you're suggesting) although I do think that some people would be better off if they did. Good question, and answers. I don't think I can disagree with much that I've read here. Not sure if anyone has hit the nail on the head though.

God created the human race so that he would not be alone. We are here to be loved by God. He gives us an individual purpose, related to bringing other souls to heaven. We may never know what our specific purpose is, but be assured it will be fulfilled before we die. Best wishes.

Here is the Reader's Digest version, the actual version is of course much more detailed.
According to Gnostic tradition we are here because of a cosmic crisis caused by Sophia (Wisdom), the last in a line of emanations of God known as Aeons.
When God came into existence his very nature as light separated the darkness, which took matter with it. This created a realm of light (the pleroma), and a realm of darkness.
In the realm of light, Sophia brings forth an emanation of her own, without the permission of God and without the help of her consort. What she brings forth is described as an abortion, unlike anything else in the pleroma. In her shame she banishes it to the realm of darkness.
Known as Yaldaboath or YHVH in the Old Testament, he takes part of Sophia's light with him. There he uses it to set up heavens of his own. He brings forth the rulers, known as Archons, and 365 angels & demons. He then decides to create people in his image, so that they will worship and praise him.
Unlike the creation story in Genesis, it is the angels and demons who put man together, each one assigned a different body part. When Adam was completed he was lifeless. Yaldaboath, the Archons, the angels and demons could not figure out how to give him life.
In the meantime, Sophia repents, and the true God feels great compassion for her. The true God himself has limited power in the realm of darkness due to his nature as light, and cannot have direct contact without destroying it. So he sends Christ (his only begotten son with his consort Barbelo) to the realm of darkness where he disguises himself as the angel Gabriel. Christ tells Yaldaboath that he must blow life into Adam. When Yaldaboath breaths life into Adam, Sophia's light goes out of Yaldaboath and into Adam, who comes to life.
Anyway, yadda, yadda, yadda, the light that is breathed into Adam is passed down to each generation and is known as the spirit. Our purpose is to grow spiritually by learning the truth so that we can break free of the ignorance Yaldaboath keeps us under, so that we can return to the pleroma. The Gnostics believe in a form of reincarnation, so if you don't grow enough in one lifetime you will be given others.
The Gnostics also believe that the serpent in the Garden of Edan was actually Christ, sent to guide the first couple out of ignorance.
The flood was not because people became wicked, it was because people were handed down the knowledge Adam and Eve gained from the Tree of Knowledge and turned against Yaldaboath. Everyone except Noah that is. According to Gnostic texts even Noah's wife turned against him and begged him not to listen to Yaldaboath. When Noah went along with the ark plan, she burned down the first one, and Noah had to start over from scratch. It is also why in the Old Testament you see people who know of YHVH disobey him, and why he orders their destruction. He needed to start over fresh with new people who were ignorant of the truth.
Some believe that Christ is sent many times to earth in different incarnations, (Krishna, Jesus, Buddha, Mithra, etc.) to help guide us to the truth.
Christ acts as the conduit between us and the realm of light. That is why Jesus does something that is totally unacceptable to Jews and even forbidden by the Hebrew god. He states that "no one shall get to the father but through me." It is one of the main reasons that Jews reject Jesus as the Jewish messiah.

We are here to make choices, choices to choose God as our savior (or not), choices to love (or not), choices to help others, give of ourselves, and encourage others (or not). we are here to discover our maker and creator...God and to live the short life we have here on earth... and then experience eternal life in heaven (if we accept Jesus as our savior).
