ERP is a central repository for most of the enterprise static and dynamic information. ERP has been designed to process large amount of data fairly quickly.

ERP has a rigid business process model meaning that it cannot support re-engineering well. And since, ERP was not initially designed for reporting purposes. Other tools and applications are required to pull meaningful reports out.

There are two other major areas to consider. Nowadays, businesses are interested in moving toward real-time processing which ERPs can not support. Secondly, ERPs data and process models are proprietary. Because of that, [web] services based tasks cannot be easily invoked.
