My chocolate lab 10 month old pup began sucking about two months ago, on her blankie. She does it several times a day when she wants too settle down. This is a new habit that won't hurt her, I'm just curious. Does anyone know what she could be lacking? We don't crate her, she has free run of the house, she gets exercise 2 - 3 per day and is around us 80% of the time. She even sleeps with us. I'm stumped.... should I try to stop her?

this behavior is from being weened too early, but I have also seen it in pups that nurse longer than 6-8 weeks. it is a soothing habit that is like suckling the mother dog. cats will especially show this when weened too soon. not much you can do but spend good, quality time with your dog and reward with treats when not doing it and ignore when doing it with no treats. may outgrow, may not, depends on the dog.

I don't think it's anything to worry about. I've had dogs and cats both do this. It's a way for them to settle down and get ready for a nap. I wouldn't try to stop her, it's just her thing! I've had one cat that nursed my shirt sleeve his entire life..no big deal to me, he'd purr away and suck on the sleeve until he fell asleep.

Just let her be a baby as long as shes not eating the fabric, no harm done.

No don't try to stop her.Its just like a security blanket for a baby.It just helps to make her feel secure and it comforts her.

Puppies and kitties do that. It just means that they're getting used to being away from their moms.
