We care because people are breeding mixed-breed dogs, watering down the lines, and selling mutts for big bucks to unsuspecting people who think they've bought something special. The "breeders" are making outrageous claims that just aren't true (like Labradoodles don't shed and don't get ear infections-the things shed worse than Labs do and DO get bad ears just as often as Labs, meanwhile the Standard Poodle, which IS a breed that doesn't shed and doesn't have oodles of health issues, and has a great disposition and looks like a "real dog" if you don't get that silly show cut is being watered down and ignored). Then WE get saddled with the angry clients who don't understand why their "purebred labradoodle, puggle, peekapoo" etc doesn't live up to the breeder's claims when they paid big bucks for it. The puppy mills thrive while all the homeless shelter dogs, which are healthier and with better temperament, are left to rot or be euthanized. It's the exact opposite of what professionals want for the future of dogs-healthy pure bred dogs that are bred for love of the breed and not money, and placing the unwanted unfortunate and loveable mutts in good homes.

You are right that irresponsible people drop their dogs at shelters or the street, and then us responsible people feel we have to rescue them, whereas it is not our fault. But face it, this is the situation, in this world. And since the problem exists, people who care MUST adopt, because otherwise puppies DIE and suffer. Plus, the ones who abandoned their dogs are not the only ones to blame for teh situation. The ones who produce extra dogs are also to blame, because there are not enough owners in this world for the ones who are now alive, let alone new ones. So, I wouldn't stop at saying that breeding mutts is wrong. I have no problem with mutts. They are quality dogs as any! I believe that even with "purebreds", breeding is wrong unless a family has already been found for the new puppies and has been checked to prove that they are responsible owners, and the law makes sure thay are recorded and cannot abandon their puppy. The same way as it would have been done with a child. In addition, with mutts there is a bigger problem, because they are usually the ones who are abandoned and unwanted. It is sad, but many people still have this mentality, and breeding mutts will only create more suffering animals.

I doubt AKC will ever recognize labradoodles or pugglpoos or anything of the sort. AKC will only take full breded dogs that are not some outcast of the breed or mixed with another. I don't know what they should be called but as far as AKC goes it's nearly impossible for those breeds to ever become recognized.

They call them these "designer" names because calling them a mutt or lab/poodle mix would make it very difficult to get naive people to pay $500-$600. These irresponsible breeders know how to get simple-minded people to pay this kind of money for a designer breed when they could just as easily get the same mix from a rescue or shelter for a fraction of the cost.

I agree, all of the new designer dog breeds are getting quite silly. And have you seen the prices ? Just crazy. When I was a kid we called them mutts, not snoodles and dockers. Thats like getting a yugo and calling it a jaguar. I say keep the lines pure.

Absolutely. Let's call a mutt a mutt and not place a fancy label on it just to ask big bucks for it!

Personally, I have a chihuahua/daschund mix and I find it condescending to call her a mutt. My dog is not a mutt, in my opinion, ofcourse, and I've always referred to her as a chidaschund. That's just me, though.

I agree with you but then again, all of the breeds we have today originated somewhere...
