I've had three, only one hurt, when he touched a nerve..very sharp pain but only for a second. Lay very still while having it. Don't plan on driving yourself and plan to take it easy for the rest of the day. You will be given instructions to follow afterward, be sure to follow them.
The answer is no - doesn't hurt enough to be concerned about.

It's called a lumbar puncture. The doctor will make your skin numb before anything is done. When you're ready, you'll be asked to lie on your side and curl up in a C-shape. A nurse will help you with this. You'll be asked to stay as still as you can. The doctor will insert a needle between the spinal bones in your lower back. You will feel pressure but no real pain when this is done. The whole thing will take 30 minutes or less. Afterward, you'll be given some water and told to lie quietly for 2-4 hours so you don't get a headache. Take a nap. There's no reason to be scared but I understand if you are. That's okay. It's normal. You've never done this before but you'll be fine. I promise.

I have had 4 spinal taps. They were back in the 70's so I am sure it is easier today but I found mine to be pretty uncomfortable. I called it pain. Pain is subjective and women medically handle pain better. I was given 10mg of Valium, a sedative, prior to to the tap. The doctor's told me I'd feel pressure. Guess we weren't on same page. The procedure went pretty quick though so the worst did not last too long. Good luck. I'm sure new school is better than old school on a spinal tap today.

Yes...It hurts more than anything I've ever had done in my life. I have had 2 c-sections & 2 other abdominal surgeries and I would have all 4 of these again before I would have another spinal tap. They did mine in the office w/no local pain medicine to deaden anything...then for the next 4 days my spine felt like dominoes being knocked down every few minutes. Demand a local before they do it....
