I have a disease called scoliosis and was wondering what do you know about scoliosis besides that it is a S-curve of the spine. Give me anything that is a true fact and comes to mind.

I have scoliosis too and I am currently undergoing alternative treatement for it. I have a 31 degree C curve in the lower spine. It increased from 24 to 31 in 4 months! They told me I need to wear a brace, but after I found out from other brace-wearers that it doesn't always work, I decided to get alternative treatment, using excersises. The curve isn't progressing anymore.

Some people have a high degree of curvature and need to get surgery. During this surgery, a metal rod is screwed onto their spine to straighten it. It doesn't become perfect, but it usually decreases the curves by an average 50%.

Good luck in however you try to treat your scoliosis.

It's really a broad category of condition as there are many different types of scoliosis and the treatment options differ on each cases and stages of condition..

I'll narrow down the answer to most common scoliosis, idiopathic scoliosis. They call it idiopathic because the causes are unknown. Most research is leaning towards general prevalence with environmental factors playing large role...hormones and growth factors also play a role...

Treatment consists of bracing and surgery depending on severity. Rigid braces have been known to be very uncomfortable and due to low compliance rate, there's high failure rate. So there seems to be movement of sort among surgeons to skip the bracing altogether until disease is bad enough to be a surgical cases...

There are new types of braces available now which are much more comfortable to wear and seems to give stable correction. Check out www.myscoliosis.net
