Depends on how you are using the term. The full name for a lab is Labrador Retriever, you've also got Golden Retriever, and many other breeds of dog with the word retriever in the name.

Every lab is a retriever, but not every retriever is a lab. There are Labrador, Golden, and Chesapeake Bay retrievers. And the AKC (American Kennel Club) recognizes 3 types of Labs! See link for info: http://www.dogchannel.com/magazines/popular/articlelabrador.aspx

the difference is in the jobs they do, some hunting dogs are used for flushing game and some only go fetch the birds after they are shot there both in the working class of dogs. I feel retrievers make the better house pet/working dog, also labs have different coats than retrievers

A Labrador Retreiver and a Golden Retreiver are two totally different breeds. Golden Retreivers come in various shades of gold, have long hair, are longer legged, longer muzzled and narrower built then Labs. They are also usually a bit taller.
Labs have blocky heads, come in black, yellow and chocolate, have short hair.
Go to the AKC site and look up the breeds..it gives you standard and pictures.
