Well one thing I suggest is diagnosing the cause. There are many, stress, illness, sleep disorder, and so on.

When it comes to treating the symptom of insomnia it is best to have some self helps...have little by your bed other than a piece of paper and pen ...what ever is on your mind write down and save for the next day. Don't turn the lights completely off untill your ready for sleep. Many find a fan to be helpful. Avoid things too stimulating close to bedtime, Full body message really helps but in doing to yourself ears and forehead…facial area message is the most efficient. Self hypnosis can help. I enjoy trying to remember a peaceful dream I have had and focus on the picture as I breathe deeply and in rhythm in and out, warm baths.

than when it comes to sleep aids I find it best to alternate between different ones. Chamomile, tylenol simply sleep, Melotonin, catnip,Valerian root, warm milk, Hops, Lemon Balm.
Good luck!

I can only pass on what I do when I have trouble falling asleep. I have been writing a novel for over 20 years. Never got to the end of chapter one. Sometimes begin a brand new story line. As I lay in bed I begin a new novel, starting sometimes with an action sequence, sometimes with some visuals (like scenery, people, etc.) and so forth. Pretty soon I'm asleep. I never seem to get very far with the novel...and in fact, don't even have a story line. As I say, I never make it past the first chapter. Hope it works for you. It's not copyrighted.

I dealt with insomnia before and what helped me is cutting out any eating or drinking several hours before bed. Also, taking a shower relaxed me before bed also. Get a pattern where you get up early, take no naps, and then set a bed time. I got a routine going (in all honesty it took a couple months) then I got better. I cut out any caffeine at night too (pop, etc). Good luck. I know what you are going through.

Tips:

Don't drink soda or caffeine past 5 PM. Don't do lots of activity at night. Stay out of bed during the day, like don't read in bed or write in bed or whatever. Don't watch TV right before you go to bed. Don't eat a big meal before you go to bed either. Try not to sleep or nap during the day.

This is what my doctor told me. Force yourself to stay awake as long as possible. If you start to get tired during the day, make yourself stay up until the time you usually go to bed. That usually regulates that internal clock. If not, try taking an OTC sleep aid, like unisom--but those can be habit forming.

no one has a "cure" but you can try nyquil, and of course there are prescription meds such as Lunesta, which work great, but you get hooked easily. other than that try green tea or warm milk. Good luck!
