My friend brings dry pasta to school and we eat it. It's really hard and quite strange but for some reason we like it. Is it good or bad for your teeth? Does it make you gain weight or is it okay to eat?
Please tell me the facts because I'm not sure if I should be eating it.

It would be no more or less healthy nutritionally than eating cooked pasta. As far as it hurting your teeth, it can wear down your enamels since it's so hard. Stick to something skinny to keep it from messing up your teeth.

answers in order:

1. teeth: not a big deal if you're eating thinner pasta shapes. if you're eating some thick shapes, or round ones that resist biting pressures, you can scratch your tooth enamel or your gums. if it's really hard to chew it up, it's hard enough to cause a problem.

2. dry pasta will not make you gain any more or less weight than cooked pasta: it's the same thing minus the water. all of the calories that are in pasta are present in what you've been eating.

the biggest "fact" i would worry about is that pasta (like most things) does swell up a bit when it absorbs water. if you guys are eating, say, a handful of dry pasta with nothing else, you could end up with a thick ball of the stuff in your gut after it's absorbed some of the liquid from your g.i. tract, and possibly an obstruction.

my advice is to go ahead and snack on one a piece or two, as long as it's not too hard to chew, and you're not eating a whole handful of it at a time.

Eating uncooked pasta is not a good idea, I am not sure of the reason but we used to eat it too, my mother said don't eat that you will get worms. The threat of that was enough to make me stop. IS IT WORTH THE RISK?

Can't see how it would hurt you, but why would you want to eat dry pasta? Weird.

It may also be a sign of a vitamin deficiency.
