Yes. Why because you want to make sure the other person plans on being with you for the long haul. Also what if you break up? Now someone has to buy the other person out of the house if the other person does not want to sell it. Imagine having a beautiful house that you want to keep forever, but now you either have to sell it or get enough money to buy the other person out. Also make sure the house is in BOTH of your names, regardless of whether you get engaged or not.

If you are serious enough together to purchase a house together, then you should already be engaged. Purchasing a house is a huge step. What if you guys break up or something, then whos going to get the house or make the payments? You should definately look for a house after your MARRIED actually.

Only buy a house after you are married. Being engaged isn't enough of a "legal" commitment.

Are you currently living together? If so then financially not a bad idea. I will leave out the moral part of this conversation because it is entirely your choice. If living together before marriage is acceptable to both of you and you have the finances to purchase a home instead of rent. I say go for it. Look at it more from an investment perspective than a debt perspective. Whether it works out or not you both will be paying for something you own together and not paying someone for rent. Worst case it doesn't work out and you sell your home.

AFTER. Who knows if one of them will get cold feet or just do something stupid? I doubt the couple would want to deal with a house together after that.

No, you should be married. If you don't get married for some reason you are going to have this house and a relationship that didn't work....the couple will be screwed.
