For the W-2, you can simply go to the employer whose W-2 you still need, and tell them it is missing and that you need to request a copy. They can supply you with one.

The post office cannot tell you if they have lost a letter unless it was registered. Contact the prison and see if your friend has received the letter. That is the only way to know if it is lost - or if your friend has moved on.

by Jan 31st you have not received your W2, call the employer and ask them if they have been sent. If by Feb 15th you have not received it, call the Internal Revenue Service at 1-800-829-1040 and file a W2 complaint. They wil take a report and send you a form that you can use as a subsitute, you will need your last paycheck stub when you call, along with the name, address and phone# of the employer and what dates you worked for them

This might be a real dumb question for me to ask - but why don't you just put your name, or at least your address, on your mailbox? Seems like it would save you a lot of trouble.

For your missing W-2, why not call your employer and see if they can just give you a copy if you pick it up.

You could call the post office and see if they have anything laying around for you marked "undeliverable" but I don't think they keep them long.
