If so, is it as great as the commercials say it is? What are some major differences you have noticed?

If Vista is like anything else Microsoft has produced, it's probably best to wait for at least 9-12 months before installing it. It is bound to be buggy (there are already security issues). I would not recommend upgrading your existing XP computer, but rather buying a new machine with Vista as the OS (in about a year, or at least back to school time). The Vista basic package includes stuff that is available free on the Internet from the Micorsoft Update site (Windows Defender, and Windows Media Player 11, and IE7 (which is VERY unstable). Do yourself a favor - wait a year, and then consider buying a new machine.

I actually am using it right now. I installed the Vista Ultimate on my laptop on the 31st and just started tinkering with it. It seems very intuitive and user friendly. I just wish Microsoft had incorporated Powershell.
There are too many reasons to start using Vista, here is the link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/100reasons.mspx
Besides, its going to be used in the future, why not get a jump start? :) Good luck and happy computing!
edit: Oh yea, the above comment about security is totally true. But just like with any new product, Microsoft or not, there will be exploits available. Just be smart when you are online; don't visit shady websites, click on random links (especially in IM windows), etc.
edit2: If you are planning to get your hands into photo editing and videos, you may want to consider a Mac. I'm not exactly sure what makes the person above say that Vista is good only for the two; its not. Your computer will have to be up to par, meaning it has to be able to sufficiently run Vista. Before you install Vista, you will have to run an adviser, which will let you know if you can or cannot install the OS. There are many other programs out there (that might be compatible) with Vista, you will just have to check with the vendor.

Vista is pretty cool: I got home premium, and I really like it so far (I just got it this afternoon). It'll just take a little getting used to, with some of the changes and all. It will also help when I figure out how to do things...(I'm not the best in the world at technology...:)).
I love Aero. It is awesome!
