Let’s say that you are a police officer. You have stopped someone on a routine traffic stop. You approach the driver… but he speaks in another language. You do not understand what he is saying. Although it’s not a dangerous situation it feels like it and can turn into one instantaneously. How do you respond and how do you get him to comply?

First thing is there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop. Second I usually see if the guy is white if he is I just let him go, if he is any other race I just pull him out and beat the crap out of him then give him a ticket and then let him go.
Of course this is what everyone believes happens, but damn them new cameras.....
If there is a language barrier you just call the language line or have an interpreter come to the traffic stop and take the appropriate actions. At any rate you try to keep the scene calm until you receive the backup.

All drivers have to take a drivers test and should know what to do if a police officer approach.

Police officers are trained to deal with situations like this also. The best thing for him to do is to radio for a bilingual officer to come to the scene.

In the first place one shouldn't be driving in this country if they can't at least speak the language enough for basic communication. So in your example it would be best for the police officer to arrest the individual and let officers in the police station sort things out

first of all, there is not any such aspect as a "undemanding" site visitors end. If ought to grow to be deadly at any time, hence the backup. We not in any respect understand what is going to take position on a end, and savour each and each and every of the backup we get. through the way, 18,937 people isn't a small city.

Most cops would look at the drivers license, figure out what race they are, and call in another officer or individual who can translate.

Interesting replies. Lets hope that next time a US tourist is in some obscure European country and is asked for his details that he gets thrown in jail.

A nice sensible reply from the real policeman though, well done!

Ask the driver for thier driver's license and registration. If they refuse, arrest them and take them into the station. If you can't learn 2 words, "license" and "registration", it's your problem.
