In highschool, chemistry class, our teacher actually gave us some - putting it right into our hands to show us how it beaded up and rolled around. I was wearing a gold ring, the mercury covered the gold, my ring was silver for a few days until th e mercury wore off. Maybe he knew something and just wanted to poison all of us.

This wasn't in the 50's but we used to put it in our hand to see if we could pick it up. We also tried to put it on a quarter to see if it would stick cause our Dad said that mercury would stick to silver. Silly weren't we!

Me. Alarming, isn't it? The thing that made me stop (long before the big alarms about its toxicity) was asking my dad about the Mad Hatter. He explained about hatters using mercury to shape hats, and the propensity for hatters of that day to develop severe mental problems.
