My own definition depends upon the presence of water and a burning sensation as the stuff leaves the portal. If it's not that wet and doesn't burn, but still comes out fairly quickly and breaks up in the bowl water, it's an LBM (loose bowel movement). But I don't think it's a brown and white issue, though. Eating a lot of fibre makes the stool quite soft but that doesn't qualify it for the big D.

Technically, it is not only the consistency, but the frequency that make it diarrhea. If you are just having soft, semi-formed stools, that is not diarrhea. Diarrhea is watery, loose, and occurs more than 3-5 times per day. However, if it is due to some type of acute infection, it is often quite more often than that (sometimes upwards of 20).

Loose, watery stool that's produced three or more times a day would be deemed as diarrhea.
