My cat got sick about the same time that some pest control service "baited and trapped rats" in my alley. I suspect they used somekind of poison (even though they didn't say on the sign they put up), because my cat got sick really bad and the vet asked me if there had been any pest control by my house recently. Did this ever happen to anyone, and can I get the vet bill reimbursed by the pest control company?

You would probably need medical evidence your cat's illness was directly caused by pesticides. Even then, if you let your cat loose in the alley you're probably liable for your cat's bills, as it was foreseeable the city would take measures to control pests in your area.

I DO hope your cat is ok.

PS- "Bait and Trap" pest control techniques don't use poison. You would ALSO have to prove the pest control company used poisons at all, which they would deny either way. It's a safe bet the bill is yours.

It will be a waste of time to go after the pest control company, if they were invited into the alley not tresspassing on your property, they are only doing their job, and if you don't own the alley the court will tell you that your cat does not belong in the alley,

Don't worry about the bill just take care of the cat

Its probably not worth the hassle... just be really thankful that your cat lived through it... rat poison is very fatal usually. I hope your kitty will bounce back to perfect health. But seriously, think about keeping him indoors from now on and letting him out only when you can supervise him and restrain him with a halter and leash. Best not to push the cat's luck, huh?

consult an attorney. you might be able to take legal action against the pest control company for failing to properly advertise their use of the chemicals. It depends on the laws in your area. If you are able to take this legal action, you may be able to seek damages to reimburse you for the vetrinary clinic bill.

Probably what happened is the rat ate some of the poison and then was eaten by the cat right afterwards before it died thus also poisoning the cat.
