It's not that their lives are more valuable in a legal sense. There are several reasons, the first and foremost being that they are more of a target due to their profession. A lot of criminals seem to hold a grudge against cops for arresting them and having them put in jail or prison, despite the fact that they were the ones breaking the law. Some times it's a prestigious thing for gangs and the like to kill a cop.
They make the penalties for assault or murder (or attempted) of a cop more severe to dissuade those bent on revenge.
Don't you think that someone who tries to kill the people who are there to protect you and those you love, those who put their lives on the line everyday for the citizens of our country, should suffer harsher penalties.

You know the last time you went to a bank, and there was no robbery. How about, do you remember the last time your car was in a parking lot, and it didn't get broken into. What about the last time you fell asleep and no one broke into your house..

That's all because of cops. Compare them to an average person.

Cops = Life on the line + Dangerous Work + Keeping you safe
Others = Safe because of cops + Work in a safe office + Stares at an accident scene on the way to work.

The Police have to protect their own kind and they consider it a crime worse than any other to have a civilian/arrestee harm them when they are doing law enforcement work. Not that their life is more valuable, but their work is difficult and involves danger. I know from seeing countless numbers of cases that the best way to get hurt is to do something violent to the Police.

Yes, their lives are more valueable. What did you do to day to make society better? What did a police officer do? The police officer put his life on the line to protect your interest so you can live the safest, happiest life as possible.

I hold an officer in higher regard then people in other professions. what i mean is that i expect more from them, then ordinary people. they choose to go into harms way and protect us from ourselves. so do i think that assaulting an officer or attempting to kill an officer needs a harsher sentence? of course i do.

They certainly seem to think so. Frankly, I think they sign up for the risk and danger and know what they're getting into. To me, it's much more horrific to kill an innocent (particularly a child) than a cop who made the choice to place themselves in danger.

They're lives are certainly more valuable than yours. Why are you asking? Some cousins or brothers in for life for this very thing?

because someone who is willing and brazen enough to attempt to murder a policeman is likely more dangerous than another criminal
