al queda makes no distinction between soldiers and innocent women, children, and non combatants. The Christians that led the crusades were not out to kill innocent women an children (for the most part).

Similarities:
-the idea that God has called on his followers to act
-fighting over who will control the middle east
-no respect for human life, whether military or civilian
-fought by volunteers who join a larger group out of a sense of anger at the enemy but also the belief that God will offer rewards
-use of terrorist tactics. In the case of Al Qaeda, this involves something like setting off a bomb. For the Crusaders, this was sacking a city and killing its inhabitants.
-multinational fighters

Differences:
-Crusaders formed large armies and mostly fought traditional battles. Al Qaeda mostly fights using small-scale terrorist or guerrilla tactics.
-Crusaders pillaged on a massive scale; Al Qaeda doesn't have the capacity to do this.
-the Crusades lasted a couple of centuries, while Al Qaeda has only been around for ~25 years.

I might add some more differences as they come to me.

Al-Qaeda and the Crusaders were both in error. I can't speak for Muslims, but as a Christian I know that the best way not to be extreme is to follow the Bible that we're supposed to believe. Of course, any who only CLAIM to be Christians...well, I don't expect any more from them then I expect from all other non-believers.

The Crusades were a task that god wanted all christians to partake in. Al -Qaedas actions are based on the ideals of a certain few men who personally wish to eradicate everyone who is not a muslim.

The crusades were a government and it's soldiers going out to take land away from someone else. If you were in the way, you got killed.

Al-Qaeda is a religious group out to convert everyone into their beliefs. They do this by making people afraid. They kill people to make others afraid.

The rapid military expansion of Islam under Mohammad and the caliphs had resulted in the conquest of the Middle East, North Africa, most of Spain and the western Mediterranean Islands. When these militants approached and started try to collapse the Byzantine Empire, the Byzantine ruler requested help from other allied rulers to defend themselves against the oncoming militants. The pope agreed, and that was the start of the Crusades.
Al-Qaeda's actions are deliberate terrorism, although I don't think anyone truly knows their motives of master plan.

the difference is the christians were trying to take over land that did NOT belong to them. and the chrisitans were murdering everyone. alquida is fighting for land that is rightfully theirs, and they are fighting people who have invaded their land. but if you want to think about it your way it is almost the same thing! they are no different then modern day israel. both are religious extremists where they feel each other has no right to exist.
