Marco Polo travelled all the way from Europe to China and back on the Silk Road (known as Cathay). Before him, there was no real link between the two cultures. When he returned to Europe with incredible stories about the Great Wall, and the culture, and other acheivements, it started a fascination with the far East that caused immigration, exploration, and the lucrative trade that these two areas eventually shared.
(also, Marco Polo didn't invent the game people play in the pool.
