I have a 5 year old female Beagle currently, and I love her to death, but she can really be a pain in the neck sometimes. We don't have a fence, so every single time she has to go out, we need to take her on a leash to the backyard- come snow, sleet, hail, tornado, this dog still has to go!
They do have some of the best personalities, and she is still very active at 5. She's not much of a barker, but she whines a LOT. And, if given the chance, she would eat her self to death. I really do love this breed though, and they are SO adorable!

For the most part Beagles are a good breed, however there are three things that you need to look out for:
1. They are born hunting dogs, so they likely may not get along with other pets and will also forage for food. Some have non-stop appetites so they need exercise and a balanced diet.
2. They have a big bark.
3. As puppies, like most other breeds, they can teeth on almost anything around. So plenty of chew toys.
They are kind of a straight hair breed and they will shed.

Beagles are my favorites - we had some and some mixed-breeds when I was a kid.
Upside - good disposition, sociable, happy, friendly, cute as all get out
Downside - not known for being easily trained, like to bark/howl, may wander off with other dogs or people, will follow a scent (hard to keep from taking off)
My best two dogs were beagle/shepherd mix - had the smarts of a shepherd, but more easy-going, were a good medium size, durable, and handsome.

I have a beagle but she is a mix. I would not trade her in for all the money in the world. She is very loving and she will eat everything in sight if allowed to. I had no problem potty training her and we did use the crate to help with that. She nevered chewed on anything except her own toys. We took her to obedience classed, which we passed. She doesn't howl and barks only when another dog goes by the house, or the doorbell rings. She loves people and probably would go home with anybody given the chance. Hopes that helps you.

I hate Beagles! My parents got one a couple years ago and the dog tried to run away every chance it got. My parents put up extra gates and everything. One day it got out somehow and we haven't seen it since. I guess since a beagle is a hound dog, that running away and finding new sents are in their nature. My brother got one on his own, his ex wife cares for it now, and its the same as the one we had before. Beagles are high maintenance dogs, they require lots of love an attention. Thats all I have to say.

I've had two beagles, Roxi and Alli both for 4 years since they were puppies and they're absolutely the most adorable dogs. Although they are not the smartest they are definitely loyal and have such a happy disposition. They are not usually mean dogs and although they don't really know how to fetch they are so fun to take walks with and snuggle up with. I definitely recommend them. The only thing you have to be careful of is training them when they are really young. If you wait too long they won't learn fast enough. We never trained Alli properly and she doesn't obey any commands besides sit, and that's only if she thinks you have food.

Beagles (as if you can't tell from the pic) are very social, and do far better when not left alone a lot. They are extremely loving and good with children. They do however need to be kept in a secure yard, because they are extremely adventurous. Contrary to popular belief Beagles do train very well, just not in the conventional way that many other breeds do.
