I think the safest gift would be art stuff...maybe some drawing paper nice markers, gel pens, colored pencils, tape (my eight year old daughter is always stealing my tape) a journal, fancy scissors...Also, this age loves American Girl dolls and they make books about problems they are going thru at school or with friends. That would be good too.
Hope that helps.
Best wishes.

Barbie is still in at that age. If she is into sports, then something sports related. Polly pocket. There are some really cool things at Target. The girl's can make jewelry. Also, National Geographic has some science experiments that are fun for the kids. Target carries these too. 8 was pretty easy. Girls like to color and play games like Monopoly and like jewelry and stuffed animals and video games. You have a lot to choose from. I would limit the price and let your son help you pick it out.
Good luck!

I asked my 11 yr old daughter. She said if she was going to a birthday party for a friend or cousin that age she would want to take a craft kit. She says most of her friends like the kits for making beaded jewelry or crochet/knitting kits for scarves. She says most of her friends also like art supply kits. All these can be found at Wal-Mart or various craft stores for as little as $10 and go up from there.

My daughter who is 9 is really into Polly Pockets dolls and accessories. Also, Littlest Pet Shop items are cute and popular with that age group. Or you could get a scrapbooking set or a jewelry making set (beads.) Target or Wal-Mart will have any of those items.

First I'd stay away from anything that the parents might find offensive like Bratz dolls as an example. I was recently at wal-mart and I saw some Disney Barbies. Barbies are always a safe bet for girls that age especially if you don't know them too well.

You should talk to her parents. I know some 10 year olds who are still in to Barbie and Bratz. And others (like my own) who is in to video games(Nintentdo DS), music, and computers. But if I where you I would get a mall gift certificate.
